What is FUE?
Losing your hair, while common, can be a troubling issue. If nonsurgical treatments are not enough to stop or slow your hair loss, it may be time to consider surgery. Board-certified surgeon Dr. Tsion Berhane performs Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) for patients who want thicker, fuller hair. FUE is a minimally invasive hair transplant surgery that uses innovative technology to extract and implant individual follicles with precision. FUE chooses the ideal donor follicles in the back part of your head and then places them where they're required. Dr. Berhane utilizes the FUE tool to carefully place each follicle graft so your results look and feel healthy. If you have thinning hair or bald areas, schedule an appointment at Jubilee Cosmetic Surgery in Silver Spring, MD to learn more about FUE hair surgery.

Ideal Candidates for Hair Restoration
You may be a candidate for FUE if you have large patches of thinning hair or bald spots. You might have tried nonsurgical methods, like topical medications, shampoos, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), or laser therapy. While these treatments may help slow or protect against hair loss, they may not be able to fix advanced baldness. FUE can be done on most hair conditions, colors, and textures. In your consultation, Dr. Berhane will assess your hair and scalp to determine if you have enough donor follicles to achieve your hair restoration goals.
Fue Surgical Technique
Your FUE procedure will be performed in our Silver Spring, MD office using local anesthesia on your scalp. Something stronger, like an oral sedative, might be added to keep you calm throughout the procedure. During your appointment, Dr. Berhane will speak with you about what will happen throughout your FUE procedure, such as how long it will take. When you're ready, Dr. Berhane and a member of her professional team will start the procedure. While they work, you will be able to relax and watch TV or listen to music.
Your donor follicles will typically come from the back part of your head as this is a place where hair growth remains continuous. For medium to large grafts, the entire back and sides of your scalp might have to be shaved. For smaller cases, you may only have to get a little strip of hair shaved, which is covered by the hair above it. The donor hair is removed in follicular units, typically about 1 – 4 hairs. The hair removal procedure is randomized so the hair around the extracted grafts will grow back and then mask the extracted follicles. The transplanted area will be designed by Dr. Berhane in accordance with the depth, angle, density, and orientation of your scalp to produce natural-looking results.
After Fue Hair Treatment Surgery
After the process, you will be able to resume most normal tasks. Dr. Berhane will discuss your post-surgical instructions, including how to look after your hair and when to make follow-up appointments. You may have some redness or swelling in the donor and transplant sites for a couple of days. Small scabs around the transplanted follicles can usually be found for 7 – 10 days. Several weeks following the process, the transplanted follicles will transition to the resting phase of hair development. This usually lasts for 3 – 4 months as the hair sheds. This is normal and the transplanted follicles will move back in the growing stage as new hair sprouts. It should take approximately 12 – 18 months for your final outcome to be visible. By then, your hair will look thicker and fuller. To maintain your new hair, you might speak with Dr. Berhane about utilizing nonsurgical remedies, like PRP therapy and topical medications.
